Accessibility statement
Last updated:
The English version is the official, legally binding text. Translations into other languages are being prepared and are provided for convenience only.
Our commitment
We want everyone to be able to learn vocabulary with WordBonk, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard only, voice control, magnification, or who have dyslexia, low vision, or motion sensitivity. This statement covers the web app at wordbonk.app. The mobile app is covered by its own statement in the app stores [link when published].
Conformance status
We aim for WCAG 2.2 level AA, the level referenced by EN 301 549 and the European Accessibility Act. WordBonk is currently partially conformant: most of the app meets the standard, and the known exceptions are listed below.
This statement was prepared on 5 November 2026 by self-assessment: a manual review of the main pages with keyboard and screen reader, an automated check that runs on every change (images without text alternatives, unlabelled icon buttons, controls a keyboard can't reach), and a contrast check of every colour pair in our design tokens for light and dark themes. It will be reviewed by [date of next review].
What we have done
- A "Skip to content" link, visible keyboard focus everywhere, and dialogs that keep focus inside and return it when closed.
- Games and Study announce right and wrong answers, the correct answer, cards left and timer warnings to screen readers.
- Every game and the study card work with the keyboard alone; single-key shortcuts can be turned off.
- Text and interface colours meet contrast requirements in both light and dark themes.
- The interface is available in nine languages, including right-to-left Arabic.
- Teachers can give individual students extra time (×1.25 to ×2) or no time limit on timed exercises and live class games.
Settings that help
In Settings → Accessibility you can choose a larger text size (up to 150 %), a reading font (Atkinson Hyperlegible or the dyslexia-friendly OpenDyslexic), extra letter, word and line spacing, a high-contrast colour scheme, reduced motion (even when your device doesn't ask for it), and turn off single-key shortcuts. These settings are stored on your device. Your browser's own zoom and your operating system's high-contrast and reduced-motion settings are respected as well.
Known limitations
- Picture rounds (quiz and match with pictures) have no text description of the pictures, because the description would give the answer away. Each picture round offers the same game with words instead.
- Speaking and listening exercises need a microphone or audio. Where an exercise depends on them, a typed or text version is not yet available everywhere.
- Videos from YouTube are third-party content; captions depend on the original video.
- Books you upload are shown as they are; we can't add structure or image descriptions the file doesn't contain.
- The live class game shows the question on the teacher's projector; students answer on their own device, which is accessible, but the projector view is visual only.
- Legal documents are written in English; their navigation is translated.
